A partial list of the primroses that grow in our area includes Heifel saffron, common snowdrop, bigger pasque flower, spring snowflake, lily-of-the-valley, lungwort, common violet, wood anemone, and two-leaf squill. The majority of them are included in Ukraine’s Red Book and almost all of them fall under the category of rare and endangered plant species.

Oksana Kremin, head of the ecology department at the Transcarpathian Regional Center for Children’s and Youth Creativity “PADIUN” and a specialist with IERS, led an environmental education class for the students of the Uzhhorod Greek Catholic Private Lyceum “TheoBand” in order to bring children’s attention to the issue of the disappearance of early-flowering plants.

The Red Book of Ukraine’s species were given particular attention as students discussed the special qualities and advantages of primroses as well as their medicinal uses.

The educational game “Understanding the plant and animal world while playing” piqued the children’s curiosity. Young nature enthusiasts consolidated their knowledge of the most widespread early blooming plants with the use of “Primrose” cards.

Primroses are in risk of extinction, and it is up to people to ensure that these plants survive. This was emphasized by Mrs. Oksana. Following that, event participants eagerly demonstrated how to make an alternative to live spring plants using ordinary used paper, creating postcards with flowers with their own hands.

The event was held within the framework of cooperation between between the Institute of Ecological and Religious Studies- IERS (headed by Alexander Bokotey) and the Nature Conservation Union of Germany (NABU BundesverbandNABU International), project coordinators –  Ivan Tymofeiev (NABU),  and financially supported by VGP Foundation.
