For the IDPs of Berehovo volonteer center “Everybody Can Help”, an ecological and educational class about birds was held. Leonid Pokrytyuk, an ornithologist, spoke about and demonstrated the animals in the “Count’s Yard’s” living corner.
Participants learned how the war threatens Transcarpathia’s biodiversity and what ecologists can do now to help birds. Following that, adults and children used binoculars donated to the Center by the Institute for Ecological and Religious Studies to observe the birds.
The stork, which was being treated at the Volunteer Center, received the majority of the attention. The bird has fully recovered and is now free to fly. Nevertheless, because the bird is not cold-adapted, it will be in human care by mid-spring.
Under the supervision of experts, volunteers could hold birds of prey. A close encounter with animals is part of the rehabilitation process for IDPs in Berehovo. It also assists birds that are unable to return to the wild due to injuries in adjusting to life with humans.
The event was held as part of the cooperation of the Institute of Ecological and Religious Studies- IERS (headed by Alexander Bokotey) and the Nature Conservation Union of Germany (NABU Bundesverband, NABU International), project coordinators – Ivan Tymofeiev (NABU), Nataliya Kulya (IERS).
