The IERS expert led an eco-educational session on bat conservation for students at Uzhhrod School No. 6 named after V. Grenji-Donsky.

Mykhailo Bilanych, a bat researcher and biodiversity expert, told the children about the bat species found in Ukraine and Transcarpathia, as well as the threats to their existence and conservation methods. Children were most interested in the topics of bat communication and nutrition.

The students were surprised to learn that, contrary to popular belief, bats do not drink human blood or deafen people with their ultrasound. These myths are the primary cause of bat extinction in the wild, resulting in the extinction of rare species.

The Institute of Ecological and Religious Studies showed a mini-film to schoolchildren about the importance of preserving the bat population. They discuss environmental initiatives that are taken around the world to preserve bats. One of them is the extensive installation of bat breeding and hibernation houses in old buildings. Mr. Mykhailo demonstrated how to properly assemble a real batbox to the children. Students were given handouts with interactive activities and coloring pages for bats in order to help them retain the lesson.

The event took place within the framework of the cooperation of the Institute of Ecological and Religious Studies- IERS (headed by Alexander Bokotey) and the Nature Conservation Union of Germany (NABU BundesverbandNABU International), project coordinators –  Ivan Tymofeiev (NABU),  and financially supported by VGP Foundation.
